Learning Lessons from Lupine

Lowland lupine grows tall and lustrous like my lofty goals—of course I can do it!

Lupine, low elevation, Mt Adams, WA

But as elevation gets higher, nutrients fewer, the lupine grow shorter, until they reach just inches off the rocky soil.

So too, my lofty goals when I deal with my body's limitations.

What seems truly possible at the bottom of the trail begins to seem downright ludicrous as I ascend.

Doubt—that fiendish beast—climbs aboard, weighing me down. What was I thinking? I'm not good enough, in shape enough, smart enough (all the enoughs) to do this. Whatever THIS is.

Lupine, alpine, Mt Adams, WA

Unable to reach my intended destination, I stop, and look down. Right there beside me are those alpine lupine. Let the cold rain pelt down, the mountain winds blow. They do not give up. They grow.
